CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - There was violence Tuesday night on the north end of Washington Park on the South Side, and, when the shooting stopped, two people were dead, seven others were wounded.
Police said the shooting broke out around 7:45 p.m. at 51st and Champlain. Chicago Police Deputy Chief Fred Melean said two groups began arguing, and it went from shouting at each other to shooting at each other.
"It's another tragic incident. We hope that if we have any witnesses out there, that they contact Area One (Detectives), and just remind you all we have the tip hotline, $15,000 reward. It's 833-408-0069," Melean said.
The two people killed include a 43-year old man, who had been shot in the back of the head, and a 20-year old man, who was shot multiple times in his body.
The seven people wounded went to hospitals in good condition.
Tents are already set up for the UniverSoul Circus which is to start tonight in Washington Park.
"The circus is not operational today and this had nothing to do with the circus. When the circus is operating, they have more security there. We have staff that patrol the park so the circus is perfectly safe to come to," Melean said.
Witnesses reported hearing more than 30 shots fired last night.
