MUNDELEIN (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Mundelein gave one of its firefighters an award at a village board meeting Monday night for saving a little girl’s life while he was off-duty.
Firefighter Dan Buhrmester stopped when he saw a three-car crash on the Tri-State near Northbrook two months ago in the pouring rain, even though he wasn’t working.
Dr. Ben Feinzimer, director of emergency medical services at Highland Park Hospital, said Burhmester played a huge role in saving a 3-year-old girl when he pulled her out of a vehicle and gave her CPR.
“There is data on this sort of event, and it emphasizes the near impossibility of what Dan and the arriving fire department personnel accomplished. The likelihood of coming back from a blunt-force traumatic cardiac arrest is essentially zero. So, whether by miracle or sheer will or a little bit of both, she survived,” Feinzimer said.
Fire Chief Bill Lark gave Burhmester a citation during Monday’s village board meeting.
"For whatever reason, something told me to stop,” Buhrmester told the Daily Herald.
