NAPERVILLE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- After 49 years, Dog Patch Pet and Feed in Naperville is closing its doors for good.
The pet store is known for being a one-stop-shop for animal lovers; selling pet supplies and helping rescued cats and dogs find a new home.
“We've averaged an adoption a day for the last 10 years,” said owner Greg Gordon.
The pet store had been struggling financially for some time, but the impact of the coronavirus pandemic was the final straw.
“What we’d hoped is that people would actually find their way back and it just didn't happen,” Gordon said. “At the end of the day, we're not selling enough stuff to make money.”
Gordon, who purchased the store from its original owner in 2010, made the difficult decision to file for bankruptcy.
He said it would take a miracle of someone coming in and buying the building to keep the store running.
The pet store took to social media to say its last day in business will be Aug. 31.
It was met with an outpouring of support from community members.
“It's been humbling to say the least,” Gordon said. “I think there's last time I looked there's about 800 posts saying ‘thank you’ or ‘congratulations’ or something really positive and a lot of pictures of animals we've sent home.”
In the coming weeks, Dog Patch Pet and Feed will work to find homes for its remaining animals.
