CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The growing number of people who turned to alcohol to cope with the pandemic have another option for getting help.

“This is, a lot of times, a private struggle until it’s not,” Tara Schiller told WBBM Newsradio.

Schiller said she believes the challenges of homeschooling while working from home and other stresses of the last 18 months are behind the more than 300% increase in binge drinking among women with children under age 5.

Her app, Sober Buddy, aims to give those moms and others a virtual coach in recovery.

“We don’t have to wait until crisis to start making changes,” Schiller said.

Schiller teamed up with an addiction specialist to create the app, which offers daily challenges and motivation to stay sober. She says the virtual nature allows people to seek help without having to get child care and lets them work at their own pace.
