(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago mayor Brandon Johnson got a first-hand look Tuesday at how the city is helping the growing number of asylum-seeking migrants.
The tour of a so-called respite center at Piotrowski Park in Little Village was part of the mayor's first full day in office. Afterward, Johnson took questions from reporters for the first time since being sworn in.
He said he wanted to see the relief effort for himself. He stressed the city has resources to help migrants without ignoring Chicagoans' other pressing needs.
“Everyone recognizes that the city of Chicago has been a real model and an example of how we treat people. And working at every single level of government – the county, the state and the federal level – for resources, that’s going to be all of our collective work.”
Migrants have been bussed from the U.S. Southern Border for months, with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, criticizing the administration of Democratic President Joe Biden for its handling of immigration.
