CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago seniors who struggle to put food on the table are getting some help.

"In Chicago, close to 8% of seniors are food insecure, which is actually higher than the national average." said Shannon Murphy, board president of Meals on Wheels Chicago.

The "Nourish Chicago Pantry" pop-ups are set up to allow seniors to come in and shop just like they would in a regular grocery store. The pantries offer 70% fresh produce, proteins, pantry, and other essentials.

The pantries not only provide seniors with nutritious food, but also cuts down on waste, according to Murphy.

"The pantry is one of those ways that we're looking to combat food waste even in the conditions in which we're serving today, because the seniors can come and they can choose the food that they want and what they need and that they plan to use," she explained.

"It actually helps quite a bit with food waste."

The first Nourish Chicago Pop Up Produce Market was held on March 23. Several more are scheduled from now through August.
