(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Work is underway on a new marina on the north side of Navy Pier.

This project was conceived eight years ago. A $ 16 million private venture led by Randy Podolsky, a sailor and real estate executive.

With construction underway, he spoke about the project in a statement.

“The years of hard work, perseverance and dedication to this project have come to fruition with this major milestone.”

The cost has doubled since the Navy Pier Marina was first announced.

Hurdles have included safety concerns because of the proximity to the water treatment plant just to the north.

There will be 150 slips and a two-story building made from shipping containers.

It's expected to be operating next year.
