(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago's new school board president was in North Lawndale to look at examples of what every school in the city could be.
A day after being sworn in as the new Chicago School Board President, Reverend Mitchell Johnson spoke with reporters, mainly about putting out the fire of inequity in Chicago Public Schools.
He called questions about whether CPS CEO Pedro Martinez would remain in his role, loaded and politicized.
"You're asking me a question which, you know, was politicized. And part of the challenge here, I remember former President Barack Obama calling it the silly season. That's a silly question," Rev. Johnson said.
The meeting with reporters took place on the West Side at The Collins Academy, where Rev. Johnson was joined by Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson.
They spoke in a small group setting with North Lawndale students benefiting from millions in city investment. The students told the new Chicago School Board President that they now look toward a life in pursuit of their dreams.
"You have no idea how fortunate you are, right now, to have that perspective. When I grew up that wasn't the perspective I had, I did not see Black doctors. I did not see Black lawyers. The notion of an African American male mayor would have been a fantasy."
