CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A newly-elected member of the Illinois House is already making history.

State Representative-Elect Hoan Huynh says his November 8th victory is a true testament to the American dream.

"I am a refugee from Vietnam. My family and I were able to receive asylum and come to United States as refugees after the Vietnam war ended."

"it’s been a very humbling experience to be the first Vietnamese American to be elected in this position and also first Asian refugee."

Huynh is proud to be making history in that respect and wants his work as a lawmaker representing the diverse 13th District which includes several Northside neigborhoods-- to help people from all walks of life and backgrounds succeed.

"We have to really make sure that we fight for everyone to have access to opportunities- immigrant rights, refugee rights, LGBTQ+ rights, access to healthcare, access to reproductive healthcare, access to housing opportunities, access to economic opportunities as well."
