(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – An accused purse-snatcher has been denied pretrial release in DuPage County.
Authorities say 21-year-old Maximus Herman of Crystal Lake on Monday evening grabbed the purse of a woman from a shopping cart at the Shop & Save Market in Downers Grove and ran from the store.
The woman pursued Herman and struggled with him in the parking lot and fell down, bruising her elbow, officials said. An off-duty Illinois State Police trooper reportedly tackled Herman and prevented him from getting away with the purse.
Downers Grove police arrested Herman, who was charged with felony robbery and misdemeanor battery. During a court appearance Tuesday, a DuPage County judge granted prosecutors’ petition to deny Herman pre-trial release, according to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.
No further details were given. Herman was next due in court Dec. 18.
“I thank the Illinois State Trooper for his quick response when he saw a defenseless woman alone and in trouble,” State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a news release.
