CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A paralyzed Chicago police officer continues his recovery with a little help from his friends.
Eddie Farrar with Barstool Sports emceed a fundraiser for Danny Golden, held at the Irish American Heritage Center on the Northside on Sunday. Golden was shot and wounded nearly 3 months ago while trying to break up a bar fight in his neighborhood. The wheelchair bound and third generation Chicago police officer was in attendance and in good spirits.
"It's been unbelievable, really it's taken over the nation. He's getting shout-outs from guys like Tom Brady, George Kittle. It's great to see everybody come together in support of Danny," Farrar said.
Farrar, in his capacity with Barstool, is no stranger to seeing outpourings of community support for individuals finding themselves in hard times, but he said that there is something special about Danny Golden's story.
"It's special how second nature it is to everybody. When it happened it wasn't even a thought, everyone just kind of jumped on board, and were like, 'hey what can we do to help?' That's really, I think, when you see people's true colors, when everyone is trying to be a helper," Farrar said.
In addition to the fundraiser over the weekend, nearly $1.5 million has been raised for Golden's recovery through a separate GoFundMe page.
