LIBERTYVILLE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- First planned in 2020, a major north suburban park improvement project could break ground this spring.
Libertyville trustees approved the contracts at a board meeting this week that will allow redevelopment work to get underway on the north side of the village’s Nicholas Dowden Park.
A vegetable and native plant garden, the village’s first zip line, a basketball court, up to six pickleball courts, a skate park and a walking loop are all included in the plan, along with a playground.
"This community park will have something for all ages in the village, and is it is extremely exciting to see such an extensive improvement that is intended to happen only every 30 to 40 years, which will provide memories for families," said Village Administrator Kelly Amidei.
Libertyville Mayor Donna Johnson added that considerations have been made for children with differing sensory needs. The total cost of the projectis just under $2.5 million with some funding coming from a state grant of $400,00.
Some of these new additions at Nicholas Dowden Park in Libertyville could be in use for nearby residents by fall.
