Northwestern University suspends all social and recruitment activities amid reports of drugging

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Northwestern University is taking action after receiving reports that students may have been drugged without their knowledge at a couple of fraternity houses last week.

Because of the allegations of drugging at a couple of fraternities, Northwestern University has suspended all social and recruitment activities at fraternities at least for the next three weeks, until Oct. 17.

“Let us be clear: The health, safety and well-being of our students remain our top priority and we are taking these allegations very seriously,” the university said in an alert.

The university pointed out its on-campus fraternity and sorority houses are required to be alcohol-free anyway.

Meanwhile, a couple of hundred students gathered Sunday night outside one fraternity house to demand that fraternities and sororities be abolished.

"It starts with Northwestern, but it doesn’t end there. There are colleges and universities across the country that have systems in place like this and it’s causing a lot of unnecessary harm," one student told CBS 2.

Northwestern urged anyone with information about the drugging allegations to call the university police department at (847) 491-3456.
