CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago police are investigating a shootout involving an off-duty police officer, which took place on Chicago’s South Side Saturday evening.
The shooting broke up what CBS News Chicago reports was a family reunion at a park in the Washington Park neighborhood. Chicago police said it happened around 7 p.m., after a man got into an argument with the off-duty officer, who’s a sergeant with the Lyons Police Department. During the argument, officials said the man drew his gun, and the pair began shooting at each other.
A 46-year-old woman, who was in the park at the time, was struck in her thigh. Chicago police said she was initially taken to the hospital in good condition. The man was also shot multiple times and later took himself to a local hospital in serious condition.
The police sergeant was not among those listed as shooting victims.
The park was crowded for Labor Day weekend. Troy Gaston, an organizer for Black Lives Matter, told CBS he was on his way to a picnic when he heard about the shooting.
“I didn't see people hugging and loving on each other,” he said. “I saw people shouting all over the place, running, frightened.”
No arrests were made in the shooting.
