ROSEMONT, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The newest runway at O’Hare is operational as of today, completing the $6 billion O’Hare Modernization Program.

Aviation Commissioner Jamie Rhee said that O'Hare is now "a more balanced airfield with three runways on the north, three on the south and two crosswind” runways- completing the runway reconfiguration.

The newest officially Runway 9-Right/27-Left is just over two miles long-the second longest.

The Daily Herald reported the city is working with surrounding communities on runway rotations so that "one community is not taking the brunt of the noise all the time."

Michael Fox, Managing Director of Station Ops Control at O'Hare United Airlines sees it as a game-changer. “O'Hare is going to be able to rock it," he said.
