EVANSTON, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- More than 1,200 people have signed an on-line petition asking that Evanston Township High School end it’s tardiness rollover policy.

Under the policy, a student who’s tardy more than 10 times cannot take part in sports or clubs and can’t leave campus for lunch.

The tardies carry over year-to-year, unless cleared by the dean.

A senior, identifying herself as Lyana Hyman started an on-0line petition on Change.org.

"Diagnosed with depression and anxiety, attending school became an uphill battle for me. Every day was a struggle to get out of bed and face the challenges that awaited me in the classroom," she wrote.

"Despite my best efforts, I often found myself arriving late to school or struggling to make it to my classes on time. Now in my senior year, I realize that this policy is robbing me of the full high school experience. This punishment feels unfair and discouraging.”

Evanston Now reports, what’s not mentioned in the petition is that there are many opportunities for students to clear tardies by taking part in a variety of programs.

A spokesperson for the school also told Evanston Now that every student has a grade-level support team (counselor, dean, social worker, and school psychologist), whose duties include “working with students to help address the causes of chronic tardiness and [explaining] the frequent opportunities to clear tardies.”
