Over 100,000 Hooisers signed up for vaccine appointments after eligibility expanded to anyone over 16

COVID-19 Vaccine

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Indiana found intense interest in COVID-19 vaccinations when more residents became eligible Wednesday.

The state’s Public Health Commissioner, Dr. Kristina Box, said more than 100,000 people signed up for appointments after the state expanded eligibility to anyone over 16; and dropped its residency requirement, meaning Illinois residents can also be vaccinated.

"COVID is still very much present in our state and we encourage anyone who is eligible to sign up for a vaccine as soon as possible and to continue to wear a mask and take precautions," Dr. Box said.

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb said he is not reconsidering his decision to eliminate the mask requirement, starting next Tuesday.

"It's not mission accomplished. Yes, there is some personal responsibility if we want to continue to manage our way through this," he said.

A mass-vaccination side opens in Gary next week.

"If you live in Northwestern Indiana and want to come to the mass vaccination clinic, that will be open next Wednesday in Gary and we will be opening those appointments by the end of the week. You will be able to sign up at ourshot.in.gov at that time. The Gary clinic can provide 2,000 vaccinations a day," she said.

People can also make appointments by calling 211.
