(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Parents rallied in Daley Plaza Tuesday to complain about school bus service they say was cut with little warning from Chicago Public Schools.

Katie Milweski, leader CPS Parents for Buses, said CPS cancelled bus service for 5,500 students in selective-enrollment and magnet schools -- with only three weeks’ notice at the start of the academic year. CPS also ended the $500-a-month transportation allowance in lieu of school bus service.

Jessica Handy, director of Stand for Children Illinois, said this as part of a pattern as the school board moves away from so-called school choice.

Some parents said the shift has been a big blow.

CPS officials blame the continuing nationwide shortage of bus drivers. They say they must prioritize special-education students and students with disabilities, among others, for bus service.

CPS concedes parents should have been notified earlier.
