CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Some South Side elected officials and activists are promising to orchestrate a boycott of Walmart if the company doesn’t reconsider the abrupt decision to close stores in the Black community.

The alderman-elect of the 6th Ward, William Hall, said Walmart is showing corporate racism and corporate greed.

He joined other elected officials and Father Michael Pfleger here at the Walmart Supercenter near 84th and Stewart.

“Walmart, put the breaks on. If you refuse to speak to the community, you refuse to stop and look at this, then maybe we should not shop at any Walmart. Maybe Walmart should be on the ex-list, and let them know we’re not going to continue to support a big, multi billionaire business that disrespects the community over and over again,” Pfleger said.

Nobody seems to buy Walmart’s explanation that it’s losing money in Chicago and has for nearly 2 decades.

“(When) big-box stores come into the community, we all know many mom and pop stores go out of business. And now, the bully, after closing all those stores up, now the bully pulls out,” said Pfleger.

This store was packed with shoppers while the protest occurred outside.
