(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Three years after it closed for good, a popular Northalsted tavern will have a much different look -- but a similar, welcoming environment, entrepreneurs say.

Kevin Hauswirth is preparing to open the cannabis dispensary, Sway, in the former Townhall Pub. He said it’s critical the independent venture is run by and focuses on queer and minority communities.

“It’s a collaboration between Black, Latino, veteran, queer-owned cannabis and business leaders,” says Hauswirth, who is working with Sidetrack owners Art Johnston and Jose “Pepe” Pena.

He said the business will aim to provide a friendly, safe and welcoming space -- when it’s able to open its doors, that is.

“As soon as we can pass the required state approvals and get our license officially, we’re going to put our foot on the gas and open as fast as possible, hopefully this month,” Hauswirth said.

It would mark the first of three Sway locations across Chicago.

“It’s really important that as we see this industry grow that we see representation in the industry.”
