Hormel Foods has announced that it was recalling two types of Planters nuts due to potential listeria contamination, the manufacturer announced.
The recall was announced last week, and Hormel Foods shared that while no illnesses have been reported, the products “are being recalled out of an abundance of caution.”
The recall affects the 4-ounce packages of Planters Honey Roasted Peanuts with a “best if used by” date of April 11, 2025, and a package UPC code of 2900002097; the 8.75-ounce cans of Planters Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts that have a “best if used by” date of April 5, 2026, and a packaged UPC code of 2900001621.
The affected products were shipped to Publix supermarket warehouses in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and North Carolina, as well as Dollar Tree warehouses in South Carolina and Georgia.
No other products or packaging sizes are included in the recall, Hormel Foods shared.
Listeria is most likely to sicken pregnant women and newborns, those with weakened immune systems, and adults 65 and older, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The germ can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, and preterm labor among pregnant women. According to the CDC, others can be infected, but it is less common that they will become very ill. Most symptoms in those who are healthy include headache, stiff neck, fever, and flu-like symptoms.
An estimated 1,600 people get sick from listeria each year, and about 260 die, making it the third leading cause of death from food poisoning in the US, according to the CDC.
Those who have purchased any of the recalled nuts should return them to where they bought them or throw them away, Hormel Foods shared.
The company also shared that a “full investigation” is underway to determine what may have caused the contamination.
