(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The annual "Polar Plunge" at North Avenue Beach to raise money for the Special Olympics has been switched to a virtual version due to the pandemic. Organizers hope it will be just as successful.
They decided it was too risky for crowds to gather for the March event because of COVID-19, and they are discouraging participants from jumping in the lake on their own, for safety reasons.
Special Olympics Chicago executive director Heather Kundert on Wednesday said participants are now asked to come up with plunge alternatives that they can do at home.
“Maybe it’s snow angels or maybe it’s a baby pool in their back yard or maybe they dump cold water over their head — whatever that might be,” she said.
People are being asked to submit videos or photos of their efforts.
The virtual Polar Plunge is set for March 1 to 7, and the goal is to raise $2 million.
