Police investigating mail stolen from collection boxes outside Park Ridge Post Office

PARK RIDGE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- An investigation is underway into the theft of mail from postal service collection boxes in a northern suburb.

The last time mail was picked up from the collection boxes outside the US Post Office on Busse Highway in Park Ridge was 4:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon. Around 12:30 a.m. Monday morning, a police officer conducting a "premise check" of the post office noticed the three collection boxes outside the building had been pried open and no mail was inside.

All three collection boxes had been recently replaced. The U.S. Postal Service police are investigating.

Park Ridge police suggest that if you dropped any sensitive mail in those boxes over the weekend - perhaps a check or something with personal information - you contact your bank to cancel the checks or get in contact with a theft identity service.

Anyone who believes they are a victim of mail theft is urged to contact the U.S. Postal Inspectors Office by calling 877-876-2455 or www.uspis.gov/report. Residents can also make a report with the Park Ridge Police Department who will then forward the report to the U.S. Postal Inspectors Office.

The Park Ridge Police Department has met with the Park Ridge Postmaster in reference to security concerns of the facility.

Earlier this fall, CBS 2 found a pattern of mail theft and check fraud at the Park Ridge post office. Court records indicated a Dolton man used a postal key to steal from a collection box outside the post office. He was arrested in September, but police said they are still investigating.
