(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Instead of tickets, police in one south suburb are handing out something else to some drivers they pull over.
A total of $1,500 in gift cards was donated to Homewood police by managers at the suburb's new Advanced Auto Parts store as part of the grand opening celebration.
Chief Denise McGrath said when her officers pull over a vehicle because of broken or burned-out headlights, tail lights or turn signals, the driver will get a gift card to help pay for the repair.
“It’s a win for everybody. It addresses the safety on our roadways, which is great for everybody. It relieves some financial strain for our motorists, and gives us a chance to partner with a new business in town,” she said.
McGrath said the giveaway will continue until all the cards are gone, which she expects will take a couple of weeks.
