SOUTH ELGIN, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- An incident at South Elgin High School Thursday is leading to extra police attention.
According to the principal, Kurt Johansen, a student reported that an adult male attempted to speak with them in the school parking lot. The adult male was in a white pickup truck. The student refused to speak to him, and the stranger left the area.
"The school administration immediately reported this to the South Elgin Police Department, and they are investigating," Johansen wrote in a message to parents.
"We are letting you know out of an abundance of caution and to ask you to please remind your children to walk with friends or a trusted adult on their way to and from school," he added.
Johansen said parents should review the following safety rules with children. Children should never:
- Approach cars or allow other students to approach unknown motorists
- Get into a car without parent’s permission
- Talk to anyone they do not know
- Help strangers with directions, search for a lost pet, or any other favor
- Reveal their personal information
- Accept anything from a stranger
Children should seek immediate help from school officials or parents if:
- An adult stranger tries to talk to them
- They are followed
- They become uncomfortable with the behavior of other students or adults
Extra police presence will be around the school area to monitor for suspicious activity.
