Pothole season keeps repair crews busy, using 35 tons of asphalt in 1 day

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The snow and freezing temperatures are gone for now in Chicago, but this warmer winter weather has been keeping pothole repair crews busy.

Cook County’s pothole repair crews comprise the same people charged with clearing snow from them.

“We do have staff inspecting the roadways to determine what needs attention,” said Tara Orbon, an assistant superintendent with the Cook County Transportation and Highways Department. “We also receive phone calls from constituents.”

Orbon said they got started in earnest this weekend. On Monday, alone, she said county crews used 35 tons of asphalt.

Illinois Department of Transportation spokeswoman Maria Castenada said temperature fluctuations mean they’re out earlier than normal to fill holes with cold patch.

That cold patch, she added, has gotten a lot stronger over the years, and what used to be thought of as a temporary fix has now become more stable.

Drivers can report potholes — and damage from them — to the county and state online.
