(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Plans to build a mosque on the southwest side of Naperville have stalled.
Builders of the proposed mosque along 248th Avenue are reportedly talking with nearby residents about their concerns. Hundreds of community members appeared before Naperville's planning and zoning commission, according to The Daily Herald.
Many residents said they support the concept but believe it's too big for the 13-acre site and will bring too much congestion to the area.
Project leaders have reconfigured the parking lot and pledged to provide traffic control and crossing guards during peak hours to help mitigate safety and privacy concerns.
The Islamic Center of Naperville (ICN) previously has said it wishes to build a mosque, school, gymnasium and all-purpose hall. The project would be phased in over several years.
