CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A special ceremony this morning celebrated the elevation of the Pullman National Monument to a National Historical Park.
The change in designation means much more than new signs around the park as U.S. Senator Dick Durbin explained.
"It makes a difference to between being a national historic monument and national historic park. Presidents can designate monuments and undesignate them or at least try to."
The National Historical Park designation was championed in Congress by Durbin as well as U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth and U.S. Representative Robin Kelly who spoke of the importance of Pullman not only to Chicago, but the country.
"The ground we stand on right now, holds so much of our national story," she said. "The labor actions that built the middle class and launched out nation into a century of unprecedented prosperity began right here in Pullman."
Kelly also said the National Historical Park designation will help preserve Pullman's legacy for generations to come.
