CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- People who live on the block where seven people were shot early Sunday morning on the West Side say the shooting could have been prevented.

Residents of the 4800 block of West Iowa Street say they had called police before the shooting that left 25-year old Terry’a Adams dead this past weekend. They say they called 911 earlier to break up a large group that had gathered to celebrate the life of a man who died four years ago.

Then around 1:00 a.m., gunfire erupted. Larell Steele lives on the block and told CBS 2:

"That shooting shouldn’t have had to happen. That girl should not be dead."

Interim Police Supt. Fred Waller said getting a handle on large gatherings is challenging, because there are so many of them. However, he said the Chicago Police Department needs to do better.
