Rain dump won't solve Chicago area's drought problem

(WBBM Newsradio) -- A meteorologist with the National Weather Service says all the rain the Chicago area is getting won’t be enough to end the drought here.

Kevin Birk at the NWS office in Romeoville on Friday said since March the region is anywhere from 5 inches to 10 inches below normal precipitation levels.

He also said because the soil was so dry, not all of the rain is soaking in.

We would need several weeks of at least normal rainfall to end the drought, Birk said.

Meantime, the recent rains have raised the levels of Chicago-area rivers and streams, increasing concerns about flooding, he said.
