(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — As clean up efforts continue from Friday night’s deadly storms in northern Illinois, the Salvation Army North and Central Illinois Emergency Disaster Service teams have been providing support to survivors and first responders on the scene.

The Salvation Army’s efforts have been focused on the Sherman and Belvidere areas, where the National Weather Service confirmed an EF-1 tornado touched down and brought wind gusts from 86 – 110 mph.

The storm caused a collapse at Belvidere’s Apollo Theater, in which one man was killed and 48 others were injured.

Within minutes of the storm’s arrival, emergency disaster service teams said they immediately deployed and reached the site of the storm-ravaged Apollo Theater. Since then, Salvation Army teams have been providing meals, hydration, transportation, and emotional and spiritual care all across the region.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker issued a disaster proclamation Saturday for Boone, Crawford, Marion and Sangamon counties. The measure will allow Illinois to provide full-scale support to its residents.

On Sunday, Pritzker traveled to the Apollo Theater. He said five of the people injured in the theater’s collapse remain in critical condition. Three other people were killed in Crawford County after a tornado hit around New Hebron.

At least 26 people were killed across the U.S. South and Midwest due to the weekend’s storms.
