(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — State health officials say it's again that time to be aware of mosquitoes, which can carry and spread West Nile Virus.
The Illinois Public Health Department wants you to "Fight The Bite" by doing what you can to protect yourself against mosquito bites. So far, mosquitoes with the potentially deadly West Nile Virus have been found in seven counties, including DuPage, Cook and Will.
"West Nile virus is a serious illness, and we want to remind everyone to protect themselves from mosquito bites at this time of year when so many of us are spending more time outdoors," said IDPH Acting Director Amaal Tokars.
Nobody has contracted the virus so far this year in Illinois. Last year, 64 people tested positive for it and five people died of West Nile Virus.
The state tests mosquito batches; dead birds, such as crows and robins and sick horses and humans showing symptoms of the virus.
Experts suggest you reduce sources of standing water where mosquitoes can breed and apply insect repellant when outdoors.
