(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The latest count in Illinois’ 14th Congressional District shows Democratic Congresswoman Lauren Underwood a little more than 1,100 votes ahead of Republican challenger Jim Oberweis, who declared himself the winner last week.
Oberweis claimed he was the victor two days after Election Day, but incumbent Underwood noted there were thousands of ballots that had not yet been counted.
Both campaigns agree mail-in votes are still coming in, according to clerks in the seven counties in the 14th District. As of Monday, Underwood was slightly ahead.
“We anticipate this going into a recount scenario when it’s all said and done,” Oberweis spokesman Travis Akin said. “We are still a long way away from determining the final outcome of this election.”
Underwood Spokesperson Andra Belknap was asked about the possibility of a recount. She said: “We are focused on counting all the votes.”
