CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Chicago area could become a lot more popular — due to climate change.
A story in TIME Magazine said hotter temperatures will lead to mass migrations all over the globe in the coming decades.
The author relied on a general rule: As the effects of climate change increase, people will need to move away from the equator, coastlines, small islands, and arid or desert regions.
According to the story, populations will shift inland, toward lakes, higher elevations and northern latitudes.
Lake systems located away from the coasts, such as the Great Lakes region, would see a huge influx of migrants as the vast bodies of water should keep the region fairly temperate, the report said.
Earlier this year, Chicago announced its new climate goals to set a course to reduce the city's carbon emissions 62% by 2040.
