CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Metra has suspended full inbound service for its Rock Island Line following a derailment earlier this morning.
No one was injured, Metra said, when, shortly before 8:30 a.m., the front of inbound Rock Island train #704 partially came off the tracks at 14th and Clark, near the LaSalle Street Station.
The train’s 600 passengers were safely evacuated and able to transfer to a new train that transported them to LaSalle Street, Metra Spokesman Michael Gillis said.
According to WBBM traffic reporter Beau Duran, it appears the locomotive and the train’s first car jumped a switch and then shifted onto the wrong track.
Metra said all inbound trains will not operate past 35th Street until the cleanup and switch repairs are complete. Outbound trains will still run but with extensive delays.
The CTA will accept ticketed Metra passengers at its 35th Street Red Line Station.
The Metra Electric Line is also an alternative.
It’s unclear when full service will return.
