(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- An area roofing contractor faces steep fines for failing to protect employees from deadly fall hazards, federal officials say.

Calumet City-based Araujo Construction repeatedly failed to protect its employees from deadly hazards this year, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, which has proposed fines of nearly $300,000.

The employees mainly did residential framing work on new homes under construction in Lake Zurich and Wheeling, officials said.

Of the three hazardous incidents this year investigated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, workers reportedly were found at one jobsite working at heights of more than 30 feet without fall protection.

Workers also lacked eye, head or face protection while using air-powered nail guns, officials said. They were using ladders improperly, and the contractor did not provide training on the safe use of forklifts.

WBBM Newsradio has reached out to the company for a response.
