(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Indiana State Police saddled up for an unusual day on Sunday when they were called to wrangle a runaway pony on the Indiana Toll Road.

The call came in around 11 a.m. about a pony spotted in the median near mile marker 44 in LaPorte County. Two troopers rushed to the scene, but when they arrived, the pony was nowhere to be found.

“It’s one of those more unusual calls, but we get unusual things from time to time,” ISP Sgt. Ted Bohner said.

“When they got there, they didn’t see anything, which is typical of animal calls like this because they’re so mobile.”

After a half-hour search, the troopers finally spotted the runaway pony, named Sassy, near a fence just south of the toll road. But getting her back wasn’t as simple as a quick grab.

"They tried to approach slowly and eventually the pony ended up getting caught in a vine because it had a bridle type thing on," Bohner said. "So the one trooper was able to get to it and cut it free."

It turns out, Sassy had made an escape earlier in the day after charging at her owner.

"I guess it lived up to its name."

The LaPorte County Sheriff's Office helped connect the owners with the troopers, and Sassy was safely returned home.

Indiana State Police are reminding drivers to stay alert for any unexpected “guests” on the road.
