(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Salvation Army is teaming up with a local utility to help people pay their heating bills this winter.

It's called Shield of Caring.

Nicor donated $5 million to the Salvation Army, which is using the money to help some people pay their natural gas bills.

People who meet income requirements can get a grant of up to $200 to pay a past-due balance.

Margi Schiemann, director of community affairs at Nicor gas, said Shield of Caring was born out of the economic upheaval caused by the pandemic.

“It was intended to assist those that have been hardest hit by the pandemic and who are facing financial hardships, such as job loss,” she said.

She adds the home heating assistance program can be a gateway to other Salvation Army services for people in need.

“Salvation Army case workers are reaching out to applicants to offer additional support,” Schiemann said.
