(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A Black-owned craft brewery from Chicago has won a national competition for a mentorship from Sam Adams.

It’s the latest achievement for Funkytown Brewery, which graduated from making beer in the garage of one of its co-founder’s parents in Oak Park to officially launching in October 2021.

CEO Rich Bloomfield says his brand is less bitter and astringent to appeal to underserved markets.

Sam Adams will share brewing techniques, procurement and marketing information at its Boston brewery. The mentorship will also mean Funkytown can meet lending partners, go to beer festivals and collaborate on a brew with Sam Adams.

Funkytown’s American Pale Ale -- called Hip-Hops and R and Brew – and other products are canned at a brewery incubator in Milwaukee. Bloomfield says he and his two co-founders want to open their own facility in Chicago.
