SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- For the first time in more than two decades, a Schaumburg man says he won’t be putting up his usual Christmas display of 30,000 lights because of a village ordinance. However, he said a new display will make a statement nonetheless.

The village of Schaumburg decided to ban Christmas light displays like Brian Koehler’s in April. The display included lights that formed an arch over the sidewalk and involved part of the parkway.

Koehler is suing the village over the matter.  He said something happened to the first document he filed, so he had to re-file and now the case won’t be in court until after the holidays.

When asked about his plan for lights this year, Koehler replied: “No lights, no nothing.  We’re just going to go black this year.

He did not disclose any specific details about what he is exactly planning.

“Well, we’re going to have a couple things, Koehler said.  "But I don’t know if the mayor’s going to like it.  Let’s put it that way.”

Koehler said he won’t be breaking any law- meaning nothing on the parkway and no arches over the sidewalk.

“It’s going to be the Grinch and it’s going to basically be the Grinch pulling down archways," he said. "And I’m going to have the village’s information up there for people to call.”

Schaumburg Mayor Tom Dailly gave his take on the matter. "This has nothing to do with Christmas.  It has to do with decorations not allowed... over or across the public sidewalk," he said in a statement to WBBM.

“The way the world is - it’s sad that this is what it’s come down to," said Koehler.
