(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A festival of Scottish culture is wearing its tartan on its sleeve this weekend in the western suburbs.

Over the past 37 years, the Scottish Festival and Highland Games has attracted 15,000 attendees annually.

“We’re bringing Scotland to Chicago,” Gus Noble, president of the Chicago Scots, tells WBBM Newsradio. “The annual Highland Games has been, and continues to be, our most beloved event of the year.”

Besides showcasing Scotland’s food, fashion, music and history, the event features competitions for athletes, dancers, musicians and even canines. Whether you’re Scottish by birth or strictly by inclination, the family-friendly festival has something for everyone, Noble promises.

“It allows attendees to put a smile on their face, warmth in their hearts and a spring in their step,” he said. “Plus, it provides an opportunity to explore Scottish culture without having to buy a plane ticket.”

That said, there will be a raffle during the festival with a grand prize of a trip to Scotland, Noble said.

This will be the final time the festival is hosted in Itasca, at Hamilton Lakes, before moving to another location in 2024.

All proceeds will benefit the Chicago Scots, one of the world’s largest Scottish cultural organizations and the oldest 501(c)3 charity in Illinois, and their principal charity, Caledonia Senior Living & Memory Care in North Riverside.
