A worker remained missing after being swept away in a Downers Grove sewer during Monday’s storms.
About half a mile away from where the two workers disappeared during the storm, police, fire and crews in hard hats searched a wooded area along St. Joseph Creek.
Inspectors with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration were on site before 10 a.m., talking with representatives of the contractor, Vortex Companies.
The village says a worker flagged down police officers at around 1 p.m. Monday to alert them that two coworkers were trapped in the underground sewer along Curtiss Street.
One worker was rescued some 200 feet away from where they went in, the village says.
That person was in good condition when they went to the hospital.
The fire department announced the search became a recovery operation after ending it Monday night due to dangerous conditions in the sewer.
Downers Grove began a maintenance project in Spring 2025 to clean, repair and line a concrete pipe that was installed in the 1960’s.
Progress had been hampered by rainfall in June.
