Wish that plant was elsewhere? September is the perfect time for transplanting. On this week's episode of the Gardening Tips podcast, the Chicago Botanic Garden's Jacob Burns talks about how to rearrange your garden.

Early autumn is a fantastic opportunity to rearrange your plants. Transplanting now takes advantage of the cooler weather and warm soil, which creates ideal conditions for roots to settle before winter.

Choose a cloudy day to reduce stress on your plants and ensure the soil is moist but not soggy. Gently dig around the plant to preserve the root ball and prepare the new site with well-amended soil, replanting at the same depth as before. Planting too deep can lead to stem rot. Water thoroughly and mulch around the base to lock in moisture and regulate temperature.

This timely transplanting boosts root growth, ensuring your plants will burst with vitality come spring.
