CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Now that various candidates have formally launched campaigns across Chicago, the long-standing process of hopefuls trying to knock each other off the ballot has begun in earnest.
Before Monday evening’s deadline for filing petition challenges, Mayoral candidate Ja’Mal Green challenged rival Willie Wilson. Wilson confidant Rickey Hendon filed challenges against Green and Wilson himself challenged hopeful Alderman Roderick Sawyer.
Ja’Mal Green said he has challenged rival Willie Wilson's petitions because he said most of the signatures are fraudulent.
“These petitions as we have shown and sent to the press, most of these signatures were ‘roundtabled’ and signatures that were done by some else. Most of the pages if you look through the petitions you’ll see one or two different hand writings,” Green said.
The technique of “roundtabling,” is when a group gathers to fill petitions with forged signatures.
Hendon, a former state senator, scoffed at the allegations.
Dozens of challenges are also in play among aldermanic races. State Representative Aaron Ortiz, the 14th Ward Democratic Committeeman, showed up to file against Raul Reyes, a former aide to the federally indicted current Alderman Edward Burke.
“The 14th Ward isn’t used to having an alderman who’s the most ethical or holds the most integrity, and that is why we want to challenge one of his allies who is seeking office of the 14th Ward," Ortiz said.
Hearings will determine who stays on the ballot or goes.
