CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Chicago reports intercepting large shipment of products used in illegal drug production.

The agency said officers, with the help of a narcotic detection dog named Aldo, seized a shipping container containing 26 boxes of powdery substances more than a 1,000 pounds that turned out to be substances used in the production of methamphetamine and for mixing with cocaine.

The container originated in China and was being shipped to Wood Dale. Customs and Border Protection said there is currently an investigation.

“Our ability to collect intelligence and the experience and knowledge of our officers were key in stopping these shipments,” said LaFonda Sutton-Burke, the agency’s Chicago Field Office director of field operations.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Chicago field office has seized about 23,000 pounds of illegal drugs so far this year — about 15,000 pounds of it marijuana, which remains federally illegal.

The Chicago Sun-Times Wire contributed to this report.
