After migrant-related spending, some Chicago alders want oversight of federal funds

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Some Chicago alderman want the City Council to oversee how local government spends COVID-19 relief funds, after the Johnson Administration used millions on the migrant crisis.

Alds. Bill Conway and Scott Waguespack have introduced an ordinance that would require the mayor to get council approval for spending more than $1 million in COVID relief money.

Johnson says the measure's not necessary because a recent council already set up an oversight structure through the budget office.

But Conway, 34th, says alders received no advance notice when the administration paid some of that money to companies to help shelter migrants.

Collaboration is not happening, he said. More than two dozen council members have signed on to support the proposed oversight system.
