CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – New Orleans has beads, booze and king cake, but for many in the Chicago area Fat Tuesday is all about paczki. And a north suburban bakery is serving up that Polish sweet treat.

Outside Oak Mill Bakery at Milwaukee Avenue and Oakton Street, Diane, who preferred not to give her last name, explained why paczki are better than their American cousin.

"You get a lot of doughnuts like down the street and it's just like, yuck. These are a lot lighter," she said, adding that she "absolutely" gets to eat more than one. "And then you find a friend to share a few with."

Regina, who also preferred not to share her last name, bought some last Thursday on Polish Paczki Day and came back for more.

"I picked up, you know, all the fancy ones like the red velvet and there's an interesting one, which has a little bit of alcohol in there,” she said.

There are two dozen flavors to choose from and the line is moving quickly with people picking up pre-orders.
