(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul says his office is investigating robocalls that tried to discourage voters from going to the polls on Election Day.

As in other parts of the country, Raoul said his office received reports that Illinois voters were getting computerized phone calls telling them to "stay safe and stay home."

It's hard to trace the origin, but the fraudulent calls could be from overseas, Raoul said. His office is investigating with federal and local authorities.

He said he's not convinced the trickery had much of an impact in Illinois, given that so much voting occurred in advance, through early voting or mail-in ballots.

"Election Day is not what it used to be," Raoul told WBBM Newsradio's Craig Dellimore on Wednesday.

Still, he said, it's important to get the word out about schemes like the election robocalls.
