CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - There’s justice for the family of a Northwestern University student who was killed hours after moving into his Evanston apartment.

Twenty-five-year old Diante Speed’s own words were part of what led to a jury to find him guilty of murder after four hours of deliberation.

In September 2018, Speed fired gunshots at someone but, instead, hit 25-year old Northwestern doctoral student Shane Colombo as Colombo was walking in the 7500 block of North Clark Street in the Rogers Park neighborhood.

Colombo, from California, had gone to a store to buy things for his new apartment in Evanston.

Part of the evidence included an audio recording of Speed talking to his mom on a cellphone in a police interrogation room, telling her that he did fire the shots and quote “hit an innocent.”
