(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- It's the end of an era for the Tempel Lipizzans, a family owned group of rare, majestic white stallions that have been showcased for years in the Chicago area.

The Tempel Lipizzans announced in a letter on its website that after 65 years of running Tempel Farms in northwest suburban Old Mill Creek, they will be closing.

"For a variety of reasons, our ownership family is moving in different directions,” the message said.

It goes on to say that the horses will be placed elsewhere in the coming years. Performances, tours, educational programs and boarding operations will end.

Three previously scheduled and sold-out performances will still be held.
